White Canvas: LV Trainer in Residence
White Canvas: LV Trainer in Residence
From February 24th to March 16th, 2023, Louis Vuitton presents the inaugural exhibition of a new series of artistic reinterpretations of the LV Trainer in Milan.
Developed by the Maison from an idea initiated by its former Men’s Artistic Director Virgil Abloh, the project employs the emblematic all-white leather low-top LV Trainer as a blank canvas for an artistic exchange. For the first installment, Louis Vuitton invites three key artists shaped by the 1980s’ New York underground scene to reinterpret the LV Trainer: Lady Pink, Lee Quiñones, and the Estate of the late artist Rammellzee.
Lee Quiñones
As one of the most influential artists of the New York City subway art movement, Quiñones is celebrated for work that is ripe with provocative socio-political content and intricate composition.
Lady Pink
A leading participant in the rise of graffiti-based art, Lady Pink remains a cult figure in the hip-hop community while also having established herself in the fine arts world.
Rammellzee
A polyhedric graffiti writer, visual artist, philosopher, and musician, the late Rammellzee created diverse and rich artworks that reflected the decaying and lawless reality of New York City's streets.
Savoir-faire
Originally designed by Virgil Abloh for his debut Louis Vuitton show, the LV Trainer fuses the authentic codes of basketball shoes with the iconography and savoir-faire of the Maison. Today, it has become an icon in the sneaker community and a staple of the Men’s Collection in both low-top and high-top expressions. Each pair of LV Trainers is created in the Maison’s Italian ateliers in Fiesso d’Artico and requires no less than seven hours of manufacturing.
The Exhibition
Hosted at Garage Traversi in Milan, the exhibition features the artists’ original hand-painted sneaker adaptations within the context of their works, as well as immersive multi-media installations charting the collaborations.
